چکیده

Event-driven programming (EDP) is the prevalent paradigm for graphical user interfaces, web clients, and it is rapidly gaining importance for server-side and network programming. Central components of EDP are event loops, which act as FIFO queues that are used by processes to store and dispatch messages received from other processes. In this paper we demonstrate that shared event loops are vulnerable to side-channel attacks, where a spy process monitors the loop usage pattern of other processes by enqueueing events and measuring the time it takes for them to be dispatched. Specifically, we exhibit attacks against the two central event loops in Google’s Chrome web browser: that of the I/O thread of the host process, which multiplexes all network events and user actions, and that of the main thread of the renderer processes, which handles rendering and Javascript tasks. For each of these loops, we show how the usage pattern can be monitored with high resolution and low overhead, and how this can be abused for malicious purposes, such as web page identification, user behavior detection, and covert communication.

Toward Exposing Timing-Based Probing Attacks in Web Applications †

Web applications have become the foundation of many types of systems, ranging from cloud services to Internet of Things (IoT) systems. Due to the large amount of sensitive data processed by web applications, user privacy emerges as a major concern in web security. Existing protection mechanisms in modern browsers, e.g., the same origin policy, prevent the users' browsing information on one webs...

Improving Tor security against timing and traffic analysis attacks with fair randomization

The Tor network is probably one of the most popular online anonymity systems in the world. It has been built based on the volunteer relays from all around the world. It has a strong scientific basis which is structured very well to work in low latency mode that makes it suitable for tasks such as web browsing. Despite the advantages, the low latency also makes Tor insecure against timing and tr...

On the effectiveness of mitigations against floating-point timing channels

The duration of floating-point instructions is a known timing side channel that has been used to break SameOrigin Policy (SOP) privacy on Mozilla Firefox and the Fuzz differentially private database. Several defenses have been proposed to mitigate these attacks. We present detailed benchmarking of floating point performance for various operations based on operand values. We identify families of...

Patching Browsers and DNS Clients to Foil Timing Attacks

Timing attacks exploit a loophole that allows any website to deduce confidential information f rom a web user visiting the website by peeping into the user’s Internet cache or DNS resolver cache. Any unscrupulous attacker can also insert ‘cache cookies’ into the user’s Internet cache. The solutions, which have been proposed so far, are disabling the caches, the java script, java and domain tagg...

KeyDrown: Eliminating Keystroke Timing Side-Channel Attacks

Besides cryptographic secrets, side-channel attacks also leak sensitive user input. The most accurate attacks exploit cache timings or interrupt information to monitor keystroke timings and subsequently infer typed words and sentences. Previously proposed countermeasures fail to prevent keystroke timing attacks as they do not protect keystroke processing among the entire software stack. We clos...
